Each year on the Friday before Memorial Day, Americans are encouraged to wear a red poppy in remembrance of those who gave their lives in service to our country and in support of the veterans, military members, and families still carrying the cost of that service.

THE MEANING OF THE POPPY

The poppy is not decoration.
It is remembrance.

The red poppy became a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice after World War I. It honors those who served and died for our country in all wars and reminds us that freedom has always come at a cost.

Wear it with gratitude.
Share its meaning.
Remember those who gave all.

What Is National Poppy Day®?

National Poppy Day® is observed on the Friday before Memorial Day. The American Legion Family brought National Poppy Day® to the United States by asking Congress to designate this day as a time for all Americans to wear a red poppy in honor of the fallen and in support of the living heroes who have worn our nation’s uniform.

Led by the American Legion Auxiliary, members of the American Legion Family distribute poppies and invite donations that help support veterans, active-duty military personnel, and their families with medical and financial needs.

In Flanders Fields

The poem that helped make the red poppy a lasting symbol of remembrance.
Written during World War I by Col. John McCrae, “In Flanders Fields” gave voice to the sacrifice of those buried far from home and called the living to carry the torch of remembrance.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

This is why we wear the poppy. Not as decoration, but as remembrance.

Four Groups. One Mission of Service.

Amboy Tum Tum Post 168 is part of the larger American Legion Family. Each group has a different role, but all work together to support veterans, military families, youth, patriotism, and our local community.
The American Legion
For veterans who continue to serve their country, communities, and fellow servicemembers after military service.
The American Legion is the nation’s largest veterans service organization and works to support veterans, strengthen communities, mentor youth, and promote American values.
American Legion Auxiliary
For eligible family members who serve veterans, military families, and the mission of The American Legion.
The American Legion Auxiliary supports The American Legion and honors the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of veterans, military members, and their families at home and abroad. Its mission includes advocacy for veterans, education, mentoring youth, patriotism, good citizenship, peace, and security.
Sons of The American Legion
For boys and men whose parents or grandparents served and were eligible for American Legion membership.
The Sons of The American Legion was created in 1932 as an organization within The American Legion. Local squadrons support the Four Pillars of The American Legion and serve their communities in partnership with their local Post.

For members of the American Legion Family who share a love of motorcycle riding and a commitment to service.
American Legion Riders chapters support The American Legion’s mission through service to veterans and their families, youth mentoring, community involvement, and patriotic outreach.
